Attend a Junkanoo festival and hear authentic Bahamian music or explore an art gallery to learn about the people of Grand Bahama and their traditions and customs.
Whether you’re hoping for a tranquil getaway at a beautiful beach, a night of lively entertainment at the casino, or a thrilling exploration of the ancient underwater cave systems, Grand Bahama has it all!
History
Grand Bahama is full of fascinating history. This island was once under Spanish and English rule before becoming independent and joining the British Commonwealth in 1962. However, before that, in the 1950s, Wallace Groves began developing the Grand Bahama Island into a tourist destination. He negotiated 50,000 acres of land with the Government of the Bahamas to make a port area, or what we now call Freeport.
One of the best ways to understand Grand Bahama history is to visit the Lucayan National Park and explore its many heritage sites. Discover ancient artifacts and skulls of Lucayan tribes or take a tour of Pinder’s Point Lighthouse, the Boiling Hole, Holmes Rock Cave, and Hawksbill Creek.
Other popular landmark attractions in Grand Bahama are:
- Old Freeport: This is a vibrant town, trade center, and market area rich with history. The town has a mix of colonial and modern architecture and gives tourists a glimpse of how trade and tourism have impacted the island.
- Smith’s Town: Smith’s Town is home to the Fish Fry on Grand Bahama Island as well as memorializes lots of Bahamian’ heritage and culture. You can attend the Fish Fry on Wednesday and learn about some unique Bahamian traditions from the locals.
Climate
Grand Bahama Island has a tropical climate that rarely exceeds 91 degrees. The hot summer season lasts from May until the end of October.
Thankfully, it does rain in paradise. The rainy season lasts from June to October, with Grand Bahama Island seeing the most rainfall in August and September. It doesn’t usually get cold on the island, with January getting as low as 73 degrees.
On rare occasions, there has been snowfall in the Bahamas, so rare that the last time it snowed was in 1977!
Grand Bahama Island Living
Grand Bahama is known for being one of the safest places to live, is extremely family-friendly, offers lots of aquatic and nature activities for people of all ages.
With long stretches of deserted beaches, a major casino, nighttime entertainment, world-class scuba diving facilities, and land and sea sports, Grand Bahama is ideal for almost every traveler.
William’s Town is perfect for those looking to experience the nightlife culture in the Bahamas. This town hosts festivals with live music and dancing and has a beautiful beach with popular Caribbean restaurants, boat rides, and more.
Golfing is another popular tourist activity on the island, and the Reef Course, located in Freeport, is one of the most popular golf courses in the Bahamas. This elaborate 18-hole course was created by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 2000. It incorporates water and greenery to make a short but challenging game for golf lovers.
Grand Bahama is also home to gorgeous historic churches, cathedrals, and chapels. Their churches and religious practices are a huge part of their culture, history, and community even now. Freeport, Grand Bahama, is home to St. Stephen’s Anglican Parish, the first church established on the island in 1851. The church has since been renovated and restored and is still having service there today.
You can also dive into Deadman’s Reef to see ancient artifacts from the Lucayan tribe. Pottery pieces, vases, shell beads, hearths, and more lay on the ocean floor, waiting to be discovered.
Freeport, Grand Bahama Living
Freeport, Grand Bahama, is the second largest city in The Bahamas and offers a unique mix of attractions and experiences. You can go from shopping at the Port Lucaya Marketplace–the largest open-air market in the country–to getting up close to native birds and wildlife at Lucayan National Park.
The average cost of rent in Freeport is around $1,400 . Freeport is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world, offering its visitors plenty of activities, history, and culture to soak up.
Freeport also has the convenience of the island’s international airport, making it easier to travel to other islands within the Bahamas.
