Not only is The Bahamas beautiful, but it’s very warm all year round. Leaving many to install air conditioning systems in their homes. Cooling cost can easily make up half of a household’s energy bill and the normal wear and tear can make the system work harder.
Want to know the secret to avoiding cooling system breakdowns and keeping cooling costs down? It’s maintenance.
Here are several simple maintenance procedures you can perform yourself.
Air Filters
The key is maintaining good air flow, both inside and out. Inside the house, use a good quality air filter that keeps dirt out of the equipment and air ducts. Change the filter regularly about once a season. If you keep your filters clean there should never be a need to have your air ducts cleaned.
Clean The Coils
Outside maintenance is simple, in the spring after the trees have released their seeds inspect the surface of the coil on your outside AC unit, if it’s covered with fuzz you’ll want to clean it.
How To Clean The Coils
For your protection, turn off the power to the outside unit at the disconnect box on the side of the house. If there is no box turn switch off the power using the breaker.
Next, clean the surface of the coil by taking a hose with a spray nozzle and spraying the coils pushing the fuzz and dirt down until it’s clean.
Even if there’s no visible dirt it’s still a good idea to clean the outside coil once a year with a mild detergent mixture. After, make sure the coil is fully dry and then turn on your unit.
Straighten The Fins
Any reduction in air flow through the fins can reduce efficiency the fins must be straightened. Carefully straighten bent fins using a butter knife or a commercially available fin straightening tool.
Level The Unit
Importantly, If the unit isn’t level this can cause the compressor to fail early. Make sure it’s level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level.
While these steps can help extend the life of your AC system, just remember it is still necessary to have an expert technician check the system at least once or twice a year.
