About Eleuthera Bahamas

Eleuthera

In the middle of Florida’s coast and the North Atlantic Ocean is the tropical escape of The Bahamas. It’s home to over 700 breathtaking islands and 2,400 cays — the majority untouched by people.

Life in The Bahamas provides an idyllic glimpse into the wild and untamed beauty of the earth.

In this round-the-year sun-kissed country lies Eleuthera, an archipelago made up of a 110-mile thin ribbon of sandy beaches. It’s an Elysium surrounded by aquamarine waters as far as the eye can see.

Eleuthera is home to over 100 scenic beaches, affordable housing, and spectacular cuisine, all without the swarm of tourists like in other Bahamian resort islands.

Location

At roughly 60 miles from the capital city Nassau, Eleuthera is a relatively untouched beauty fringed by many cays and sandbars. It conveniently has access to three airports, despite its remote location.

  • North Eleuthera Airport flies from the northernmost point of the island.
  • Governors Harbour Airport runs flights from the central part of Eleuthera.
  • Southern Eleuthera is home to Rock Sound Airport, which connects Eleuthera to various Bahamian islands. They also run a few international flights to the US.

History

The original inhabitants of the area were the Taino or Arawak people, who suffered great hardships at the hands of the Spanish. In the 1500s they were captured and sent to work in the mines of Hispaniola, which they did not survive.

After that, Eleuthera remained predominantly empty until 1648. That’s when religious groups from Bermuda arrived in pursuit of a place where they could practice their faith safely without British intolerance. There are still remnants of their presence on the island in the many beautiful churches and homes.

With “Eleutheran Adventurers” as their moniker, the Puritan pilgrims christened the island Eleuthera. This came from the Greek “Eleutheria,” which means freedom, with Eleuthera meaning “free.” The island’s breezy, paradisiacal nature makes the name an apt fit.

Climate

The climate of Eleuthera is sub-tropical, with warm temperatures and relatively high humidity year-round. The average temperature of Eleuthera typically ranges from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24°C to 29°C) during the winter months (December through March) and mid-80s to mid-90s Fahrenheit (29°C to 35°C) during the summer months (June through September).

The rainy season in Eleuthera runs from May through October, with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring in August and September. During this time, the island may experience brief but heavy rain showers or thunderstorms. The rest of the year is generally drier, with lower chances of rain.

One of the unique aspects of the climate in Eleuthera is the Bahamian trade winds. These steady breezes blow from the northeast throughout most of the year, providing relief from the heat and helping to keep the island’s climate pleasant.

1. Preacher’s Cave

Preacher's cove

Preacher’s Cave is one of the most historic and significant sites in Eleuthera. Located near the northern tip of the island, the cave was named after the first religious service held on Eleuthera in 1648 by the Eleutheran Adventurers.

The group left Bermuda in search of religious freedom and a new life. After landing on what is now known as Eleuthera, the group spent several months exploring the island before settling in Preacher’s Cave. The cave provided shelter and protection from the elements, and the group held their first religious service inside the cave’s walls.

Today, Preacher’s Cave is a popular destination for visitors to Eleuthera. The cave features a large entrance that leads into a spacious interior area, and visitors can explore the cave’s chambers and admire its natural beauty. The cave is open to visitors year-round and is free to explore.

2. Glass Window Bridge

Glass Window Bridge

The Glass Window Bridge in Eleuthera refers to the link between North Eleuthera and the rest of the island. It is a famous natural landmark that connects the northern and southern parts of Eleuthera.

The natural erosion of the limestone rock over time has created this narrow passage, which has become an iconic attraction on the island.

The bridge is named after the stunning view it offers of the stark contrast between the deep blue Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm turquoise waters of the Bight of Eleuthera on the other. The narrow strip of land where the bridge is located is just a few feet wide, making it a unique and picturesque sight for visitors.
